In the early 60’s, Charlie Spencer was a surgical shoemaker by trade. His daughter asked if he could make a pair of sheepskin slippers to keep her feet warm. The early prototypes were not glamorous, but they served the purpose. Meanwhile, Charlie’s son John and his friend Barry made some to put on after surfing, and they quickly became popular with their surfing friends. But that was just the beginning.
Why Ugg?
Barry introduced Charlie to a man named John Arnold who owned a surf shop in Adelaide, and sales and production increased. By the late 60’s, even top Australian surfers came to know about these comfortable boots. A customer once remarked that the boots were ugly. John thought, “Hmm, ugly boots… Perfect, we’ll call them Ugg boots!” The clever name was registered in 1971.
